Credit Counselor (Bilingual) – Part-Time

Job Summary

The Credit Counselor reports to the Supervisor and is responsible for advising customers on the Division’s credit policies. This role involves answering customer questions concerning commercial deposits, delinquent accounts, discounts, and rates, as well as ordering services connected or disconnected, and granting or refusing credit.

Essential Functions

  • Research and discuss delinquent bill problems with customers, referring them to agencies as appropriate.
  • Grant or refuse credit extensions on unpaid balances.
  • Provide information on customer requests or complaints concerning the Division’s billing, service, credit, and deposit policies.
  • Compute and pro-rate bills and adjust accounts as required.
  • Determine commercial and residential deposits and ascertain proper identification for residential deposits.
  • Advise customers on Division credit policies, ways to save on utility bills, and methods for resolving bill payment problems at paying agencies.
  • Assist in working out extended pay plans for customers.
  • Conduct hearings and research credit history for various reasons, such as determining customer’s credit history, itemizing accounts, determining customer’s liability, and processing service orders.
  • Prepare refunds on deposits, overpayments to customers, listings, records, tickets, and reports.
  • Ensure that commercial deposits have sufficient deposits and signed contracts before approving meter service tickets.
  • Originate connects and release blocked accounts after appropriate investigation of account information.
  • Determine charges on damaged property.
  • Block accounts when investigations show evidence to do so.
  • Reinstate charge-offs, credits, and debits.
  • Research Community Service Agency payments on customer’s accounts to determine the balance after a grant is applied.
  • Answer telephone, give and receive information, and relay messages.
  • Operate Division vehicles, computer input/output equipment, and microfilm equipment.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must pass Division Data Entry Exercises, Group C.
  • Must be fluent in Spanish in Areas 520830, 520870, 520840, and 520850.
  • Must successfully complete a Customer Service Simulation Test.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license from the state of residence.

Physical Demands

Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds or more of force on a regular basis.
