Career & Internship Advisor
This position, under the supervision of the Career Services Coordinator, plays a pivotal role in empowering students and alumni to achieve their career goals. The Career & Internship Advisor provides essential guidance and support in all facets of career planning, serving as a vital link between the office, students, alumni, and faculty. This role is crucial for designing and implementing impactful programs, services, and activities that assist individuals in navigating their career paths effectively.
Job Summary
The Career & Internship Advisor delivers personalized and group career counseling and job search coaching to help students and alumni make informed career decisions, explore diverse occupational choices, prepare for an effective job search, and connect with part-time, internship, and full-time employment opportunities. A key contributor to student success, this advisor also meticulously develops and maintains detailed files and records of student and alumni internships, along with a comprehensive log of services offered.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate Communication & Collaboration: Maintain effective communication with academic departments to ensure successful career preparation for current students and alumni.
- Build Academic Partnerships: Assist the Career Services Coordinator in developing and maintaining strong relationships with academic department chairs, department/program heads, and faculty, specifically targeting key faculty for employment opportunities for students.
- Conduct Career Assessments: Assess students’ career aptitude using tools such as Kuder Navigator, LEAD NTU, or other appropriate and beneficial programs.
- Provide Career Advisement: Assist the Career Services Coordinator with career development and job search advisement to current students and alumni in both individual and group settings.
- Offer Mentorship & Guidance: Mentor and advise students and alumni on a variety of career development topics, including but not limited to résumé development, letters of interest, interviewing skills, and more. A specific focus will be on helping students and alumni with their internship search and maintaining accurate data on student internships. This involves becoming familiar with University internship policy and procedure, as well as learning from peer University/College Career Services for constant improvement.
- Host Office Hours: Hold weekly office hours to be accessible to students and alumni.
- Conduct Outreach & Workshops: Conduct regular outreach efforts including workshops and presentations to classes, student clubs/organizations, and during campus events such as new student orientation.
- Support Outreach Strategy: Assist the Career Services Coordinator in developing and maintaining an advertising and outreach strategy designed to attract more students to on-campus career events and online career services resources.
- Disseminate Opportunities: Collect and disseminate employment and internship opportunities to appropriate faculty, staff, organizations, students, and alumni.
- Cultivate Employer Relationships: Assist the Career Services Coordinator in maintaining strong relationships with regional employers for employment and internship leads; actively build a network of employment and internship opportunities.
- Engage in Employer Development: Participate in employer development activities including employer visitations, advisory boards, on-campus recruiting, and the development of job and internship leads with extensive documentation for data purposes.
- Participate in University Committees: With approval and recommendation from the Career Services Coordinator, participate in various university committees and university-wide events to enhance awareness and visibility of the Office of Career Services.
- Encourage Faculty Engagement: Encourage faculty to maintain equitable opportunities for students and alumni by sending job opportunities and internships to the Office of Career Services to be distributed widely.
- Advise Departmental Events: Provide advisement to departments in their development of major-specific career-related events.
- Maintain Professional Development: Maintain ongoing professional development via involvement with relevant professional associations such as the National Career Development Association and others.
- Ensure Active Communication: Maintain active communication with the Career Services Coordinator regarding project progress, new initiatives, and more.
- Coordinate Data & Reports: Coordinate data compilation, statistical reports, and correspondence, depending upon the area of assignment or initiative at hand.
- Perform Administrative Tasks: Assist with general administrative tasks as needed by the Career Services Coordinator.
- Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, or a related field (equivalent workplace experience also accepted).
- Experience:
- Relevant experience actively advising adults and young adults in a secondary or post-secondary academic setting.
- University or college-level professional experience preferred.
- Interpersonal Skills: Enjoyment of and ability to work with people; strong interpersonal skills.
- Adaptability: Willingness to learn new information.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Organization: Attention to detail and accuracy; strong planning and organization skills.
- Self-Motivation: Self-motivated and driven; ability to carry through on projects independently.
- Technology Proficiency:
- Proficiency in social media, word processing, inputting, and organizing data.
- Excellent computer literacy and strong technology skills to support a high-quality learning experience for students, operate efficiently as part of a team, and the capacity to learn and utilize new online technologies as appropriate and necessary.
