Business Development & Strategy Intern | American Water
The Tone:
This is an internship at American Water, located in Sacramento, CA. American Water is the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., serving approximately 14 million people across multiple jurisdictions and military installations. This role offers hands-on exposure to the strategic processes of identifying, securing, and integrating acquisitions within a vital industry. The intern will support California American Water’s growth initiatives, contributing to the delivery of safe, clean, reliable, and affordable water and wastewater services.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Acquisition Exposure: Gain firsthand experience in the full spectrum of business development activities, including acquisition strategy, research, and integration planning.
• Documentation Management: Support the BD team in organizing and maintaining SharePoint documentation for improved efficiency and accessibility.
• Regulatory Assistance: Assist in compiling and organizing testimony and regulatory documentation related to acquisitions.
• Database Development: Help develop and maintain a public-facing database of affirmative acquisition references to support future growth initiatives.
• Strategic Reporting: Conduct research and prepare reports to support acquisition evaluations and broader strategic planning efforts.
• Data Analysis: Assist with databases and other reporting tools to compile, calculate, track, and report data pertaining to various processes.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Enrollment in an undergraduate degree program in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Public Administration, Political Science, or a related field.
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years of completed coursework.
• Skills: Strong verbal and written communication; analytical skills for research, data analysis, and clear presentation of findings; organizational skills to prioritize, manage documentation, and support project workflows; technical proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and database tools; ability to manage time independently across multiple projects and deadlines; willingness to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
