Overview

This is an entry-level professional position in the Bank Examiner series within the Department of Financial Institutions. Under immediate supervision, the Bank Examiner 1 is responsible for professional bank examination work of routine difficulty. Incumbents will learn to review and analyze the financial statements and operations of state-chartered banks licensed to operate in Tennessee. This class serves as a training role and will flex to Bank Examiner 2 upon successful completion of a two-year training period. Inadequate or marginal performance during the training period may result in automatic demotion or termination.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or another related business degree, with a minimum of nine (9) semester hours of accounting and/or finance.
  • OR
  • Professional bank examination work may substitute for the required education, including the accounting coursework, on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of four (4) years.

Additional Requirement:

  • Maintain a Valid Motor Vehicle Operators License.

Responsibilities (Work Activities)

As a Bank Examiner 1, you will:

  • Analyze Data and Information: Learn to analyze and interpret financial data to determine the financial stability of an institution. This includes evaluating earnings, capital, liquidity, investments, interest rate risk, and internal controls.
  • Identify Compliance with Rules and Regulations: Learn to ensure financial institutions meet all state and federal regulatory guidelines by reviewing policies, procedures, practices, processes, and financial records. Continually maintain up-to-date knowledge of these areas.
  • Communicate Information: Ask questions and discuss information with team members, supervisors, and other Department personnel regarding assigned tasks, policies, responsibilities, and procedures. Meet with financial institution management to obtain information and deliver examination findings.
  • Prepare Written Comments, Analyses, and Related Documentation: Learn to write comments and analyses for examination reports, scope memoranda, work papers, and other documentation to support findings, conclusions, and ratings.
  • Train: Actively participate in on-the-job training and required schools, completing requisite pre-course work when applicable.
  • Lead: Learn to serve as Operations Manager, overseeing the examination team’s evaluation of capital, earnings, liquidity, interest rate risk, and internal controls.
  • Travel: Travel to in-state and out-of-state sites to complete examination training, as well as to examination and other work sites.

Candidates for State of Tennessee positions involving driving responsibilities must meet the following minimum driver qualifications:
