Special Education Case Management Legal Intern | NYC Public Schools

This role is crucial for ensuring the school system’s compliance with federal and state special education laws and settlements, safeguarding the rights and services of students with disabilities.

• Team: Supports Special Counsel under the direction of the Executive Deputy Counsel of Special Education Case Management (OGC-SECM).
• Mission: Supports legal compliance with special education settlements and laws, ensuring equitable education for students with disabilities.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Legal Research: Perform legal research assigned by Special Counsel, including review of legal cases, opinions, decisions, and policy guidance documents related to special education law.
• Document Drafting: Assist Special Counsel in preparing legal arguments and drafting various legal documents such as memoranda, motions, pleadings, briefs, subpoenas, and response letters for specific legal matters.
• Compliance Monitoring & Reporting: Summarize audits and court reports prepared by Court Appointed Auditors and Special Masters, and assist with monitoring workflow to ensure compliance with multiple deadlines.
• Case Review & Analysis: Review case records and reports pertaining to the implementation of impartial hearing orders, and draft legal memoranda summarizing procedural case history, applicable laws, and recommendations.
• Process Improvement: Review existing administrative processes and assist with creating comprehensive training guides and reference materials for the office, and analyze impacts of proposed regulation changes.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Graduation from an accredited United States law school or admission to the New York State Bar.
• Experience: Two additional years of relevant work experience, beyond the law degree or bar admission.
• Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to understand provisions of applicable laws and regulations, clear and concise writing, and efficient legal research abilities.
