Implementation Unit Legal Intern, OGC – 26713 | NYC Public Schools

The Tone:
This is a temporary internship role at NYC Public Schools, located in the New York City area. NYC Public Schools is the largest public school system in the United States, committed to providing quality education and services to its students. This Attorney Intern position is crucial for ensuring the timely and efficient implementation of impartial hearing orders and pendency entitlements for students with special needs, directly impacting the delivery of vital services and payments. The role supports the Office of the General Counsel in navigating complex legal and policy frameworks to uphold student rights and departmental compliance.

• Mission: Ensure the timely and efficient implementation of impartial hearing orders and pendency entitlements requiring the New York City Public Schools to render payments and/or deliver services.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Conduct legal research assigned by the Senior Policy Advisor, including reviewing legal cases, opinions, decisions, and policy guidance documents.
• Review and summarize audits and court reports prepared by Court Appointed Auditor and Special Master concerning the implementation of impartial hearing orders.
• Draft response letters to New York State Education Department Special Education Quality Assurance (SEQA) complaints and Compliance Assurance Plans (CAPs).
• Assist the Senior Policy Advisor with monitoring workflow, ensuring compliance with multiple deadlines, and preparing internal reports and summaries.
• Review existing administrative processes and contribute to the creation of comprehensive training guides and reference materials for the office.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Graduation from an accredited United States law school (as defined by New York Court of Appeals Sections 520.3 or 520.5) or admission to the New York State Bar.
• Experience: Two additional years of relevant work experience beyond the minimum educational/bar admission requirements.
• Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong ability to understand provisions of applicable laws and regulations, proficiency in writing clearly and concisely, and efficient legal research skills.
