Tax Accounting Intern | Mauldin & Jenkins

The Tone:
This is an internship at Mauldin & Jenkins, located in Houma, LA. Mauldin & Jenkins, LLC is an accounting firm that provides auditing, management services, and preparation of tax returns for clients. This role offers a significant opportunity to gain practical experience across various accounting and tax functions. Interns are considered an integral part of the team, working alongside other professionals in a technologically advanced and friendly environment, directly contributing to client engagement success and the firm’s service delivery.

The TL;DR

• Mission: To support client engagements by assisting with audit procedures, management services, and tax return preparation, ensuring accuracy and compliance.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Control Evaluation: Assist with the study and evaluation of internal accounting controls and test their compliance when deemed reliable.
• Financial Reporting: Prepare financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
• Tax Compliance: Review data input for tax returns, identify and resolve technical tax issues, and assist in the overall review of tax preparations.
• Account Reconciliation: Examine client reconciliations of bank accounts and subsidiary accounts to controls, then investigate any discrepancies found.
• Schedule and Accrual Preparation: Prepare schedules for write-offs of prepaid expenses and deferred charges, and compute accruals while documenting their underlying support.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Currently pursuing a college degree with a major or concentration in accounting.
• Experience: No specific years of experience required beyond current enrollment in an accounting degree program.
• Skills:
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• A working knowledge of federal and state income tax laws and regulations at a level sufficient for tax return preparation.
• A well-rounded knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and generally accepted auditing standards.
• An awareness of current developments within the accounting profession.
• Proficiency in using available resources such as firm manuals and computer software, alongside a practice of accuracy in handling information.
• Bonus: Overnight travel may be necessary for certain assignments, and having a foundational knowledge of the Firm’s operations is beneficial.
