Accounting Internship – Summer 2027 | WellsColeman

The Tone:
This is an Accounting Internship at WellsColeman, located in Richmond, VA. WellsColeman is a business advisory, tax, and accounting firm, serving its clients for over 80 years. This role is crucial for supporting the firm’s client service initiatives and offers the potential for a direct hire into a full-time position upon graduation. Interns contribute directly to the firm’s core values of culture, accountability, relationships, and excellence, impacting clients, team members, and the community.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Seasonal (minimum 32 hours/week for 6 consecutive weeks)
• Location: In-person, Richmond, VA

• Team: Reports under direct supervision of senior staff accountant or manager
• Mission: To assist senior staff in preparing tax returns, audit workpapers, and financial statements, applying accounting principles to deliver excellent client results.
• Tech Stack: paperless audits, audit software, accounting, tax, fixed asset tracking software

What You’ll Actually Do
• Prepare: Individual, partnership, and corporate tax returns and related workpapers, applying federal and state tax laws to various situations.
• Assist: Senior staff with financial statement audits, including onsite visits, employee benefit plan audits, and completing test work in areas such as cash, receivables, and fixed assets.
• Develop: Analytical skills to identify potential tax issues and advise on them, alongside basic tax research skills and general accounting and auditing research skills.
• Prepare: Audit, review, and compilation workpapers, financial statements, and reconciliations, while also performing data input and analysis.
• Record: Adjusting journal entries to complete trial balances and calculate depreciation and amortization, preparing associated schedules of property and equipment.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Must be a Junior, Senior, or Master’s student pursuing a degree in Accounting.
• Experience: Interest in pursuing a career in public accounting and taking the CPA exam.
• Skills: Analytical skills, basic tax research skills, effective communication, interpersonal skills, familiarity with accounting principles and financial statement disclosures.
• Bonus: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 preferred; reliable transportation for daily commute to office, client visits, and social events.
