Accountant | Maricopa County

The Tone:
This is an Unclassified role at Maricopa County, located in Phoenix, AZ, with eligibility for telework after six months. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office serves nearly four million residents, handling felony and misdemeanor prosecutions while providing civil legal services to county agencies. The Accountant role is critical to ensuring the financial integrity and accurate reporting for this large public prosecutorial agency. This position contributes significantly to the effective management of an annual operating budget exceeding $150 million.

• Mission: Ensure financial integrity and accurate reporting for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office through diligent financial management and compliance.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Data Analysis: Work with large and complex datasets using Microsoft Excel and Access to support data analysis and reporting, including applying advanced data transformation techniques and maintaining structured data environments.
• Financial Processing: Process, analyze, review, reconcile, and monitor financial activities, initiating journal entries to ensure the financial integrity of assigned accounts.
• Grant Management: Perform grant-related post-award accounting functions, such as reconciling accounts, initiating reimbursement/draw-down requests, forecasting, and preparing financial reports to ensure grant maximization and compliance.
• Asset Management: Oversee all MCAO departmental and fixed assets by accounting for purchases, ensuring items are tagged, inventoried, reported on, and disposed of in accordance with standards.
• Financial Reporting: Prepare the department’s Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA) for inclusion in the County’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and the departmental indirect cost allocation in accordance with federal regulations.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, mathematics, or a closely related field. A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
• Experience: One year of experience in auditing, government finance/accounting, grant accounting, or budgeting.
• Skills: Data analysis and reporting, financial reconciliation and journal entry processing, understanding of GAAP, GASB, and CFR compliance, financial close activities, grant accounting principles.
• Bonus: Experience in public sector or non-profit accounting with specific experience in auditing, grants accounting, or budgeting; ability to obtain a valid Arizona Driver’s License; ability to successfully complete grantor’s required training.
