Energy Accountant | Tenaska

The Tone:
This is an in-person role at Tenaska. Tenaska is one of the largest privately held companies in the United States, specializing in natural gas and power marketing, power management, and the development and operation of generation assets. As an integral part of the Tenaska Power Services Co. accounting function, this role is crucial for performing daily and monthly accounting activities across various financial operations. The Accountant ensures accurate financial reporting by handling reconciliations, invoicing, and financial analyses, directly impacting the company’s financial integrity and operational understanding while working closely with teams across the organization.

• Mission: Perform daily and monthly accounting activities, including account reconciliations, journal entries, customer invoicing, financial analyses, and preparation of management, financial, tax, and regulatory reports.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Office products (especially Excel), accounting systems, trading systems, settlement systems, financial systems

What You’ll Actually Do
• Daily Operations: Execute daily accounting activities such as payment and database entries, and prepare assigned journal entries and associated supporting schedules.
• Customer Billing & Relations: Prepare, review, and distribute monthly customer invoices and statements, and communicate with customers regarding billing and payment inquiries to ensure timely payments.
• Financial Analysis & Reporting: Prepare monthly account reconciliations and supporting schedules, conduct financial analyses, and assist with the preparation of financial statements and various management reports.
• Compliance & Audit: Contribute to the preparation of assigned tax and regulatory filings and support various internal and external audits.
• Operational Integration: Develop a strong understanding of internal trading and settlement applications, the electricity settlement process, and the impact of trade and contract terms on financial results, including collaborating with other departments to resolve accounting issues and support business needs.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, preparing candidates for an early-career accountant role focused on the intricacies of energy sector financial operations.
• Experience: No specific years of prior experience are explicitly required; however, preferred qualifications include experience utilizing accounting, trading, settlement, or financial systems. Prior power industry experience is also a strong advantage.
• Skills: Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, and highly effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with various stakeholders.
• Bonus: Preferred qualifications include a Master’s degree and/or CPA certification, proficiency in Microsoft Excel, experience with specialized financial systems, and a genuine desire to learn and understand the wholesale electric power industry.
