Accountant | Housing Authority of Salt Lake City
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Housing Authority of Salt Lake City, located in Salt Lake City, UT. The Housing Authority is a federally funded Special Purpose Government Agency, serving as the largest public housing authority in Utah and the largest provider of affordable housing in the Salt Lake Valley. This role is crucial in supporting a complex organization that administers federally and state-funded programs, manages housing assets, and upholds the agency’s mission to provide affordable housing opportunities to over 10,000 individuals, including seniors, people with disabilities, children, and previously unhoused persons. The Accountant ensures the integrity of financial operations for the agency and its affiliated nonprofit entities.

• Mission: To maintain accurate financial records, prepare reports and statements, support audits, and ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements for a complex organization administering federally and state-funded programs and managing housing assets.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Financial Transactions: Record financial transactions, input data, journal vouchers, and other adjustments into the computerized system, posting journal entries to the general ledger.
• Financial Reporting: Aid in maintaining general ledgers of receipts and expenditures, and prepare required financial and compliance reports.
• Budget Management: Review program fund budgets, prepare operating statements, balance sheets, and other reports, assisting with the preparation of financial summaries and budgets.
• Account Control: Control specialized accounts such as tenants accounts receivable, security deposits, operating & replacement reserves, assistance payments, and cash receipts.
• Audit Support: Assist in the close of financial operations, preparation of required financial statements, and provide necessary account information and documents to outside auditors.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or other related field. Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting and auditing principles, with the ability to apply them accurately in a highly regulated environment.
• Experience: 3-5 years of accounting experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven ability to perform in-depth accounting, financial reporting, and analysis while maintaining productivity under tight deadlines and pressure.
• Skills: High proficiency with accounting systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and related financial software. Exceptional analytical, organizational, and prioritization skills, with strong attention to detail and adherence to established policies and procedures. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to deliver exceptional customer service and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
