Department Details – Application Platform Engineering:
The Application Platform Engineering department is a critical component of Kaiser Permanente’s digital infrastructure, primarily accountable for the comprehensive hosting platform for KP.org, our flagship online portal. This team also meticulously manages all environments that support application development and testing, ensuring a robust and stable foundation for innovation.
Key responsibilities and services provided by the department include:
- Providing advanced application load balancing to distribute network traffic efficiently and ensure high availability for critical applications.
- Delivering essential hosting services for various internal and external applications.
- Managing comprehensive certificate management services to secure all digital communications and ensure compliance.
- Implementing and maintaining robust Web Application Firewall (WAF) solutions to protect against cyber threats and vulnerabilities.
- Utilizing edge caching for content delivery (CDN) to optimize website performance, reduce latency, and enhance the user experience.
- Offering dedicated end-to-end environment support across the entire application lifecycle, from development to production.
Internship Projects:
As a 2026 Summer Intern in Application Platform Engineering, you will be deeply involved in projects that directly contribute to the department’s strategic goals. Your key projects will include:
- Akamai Service Utilization Dashboards: You will be accountable for developing and implementing comprehensive dashboards to monitor and visualize the utilization of Akamai services. This project will involve data collection, analysis, and presentation to provide actionable insights into performance, resource consumption, and efficiency.
- Automation Consolidation & Modernization: You will play a crucial role in consolidating and modernizing existing automation efforts. This includes helping to account for and bring all automation scripts and processes under one unified umbrella to improve tracking, maintainability, and overall efficiency within the department.
Target Majors:
We are seeking ambitious students pursuing degrees in the following fields:
- Computer Science
- Mathematics/Statistics
Target Skillset & Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will possess a strong foundation and interest in relevant technologies, including:
- Exposure to modern scripting languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript, Shell Scripting).
- Working knowledge of websites and mobile applications, including an understanding of underlying architectures and development principles.
- Familiarity with or a strong interest in learning tools and concepts related to code scanning, security best practices, and compliance standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a hybrid team environment.
- A proactive attitude and eagerness to learn and contribute to complex technical projects.
