Job Description
This is a Full Time Lab Administration position for the Night Shift (2200-0630), offering a Sign-On Bonus of $5,000.00.
Job Summary:
The role primarily involves performing venipuncture and capillary puncture for blood specimen collection on patients across all age groups (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric). The individual is expected to demonstrate a high degree of skill and professionalism to foster patient confidence. Additionally, the role includes performing point-of-care testing, collecting non-blood specimens as instructed, and assisting the Lead Phlebotomist with the technical and administrative management of specimen procurement and processing services.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Minimum Years of Experience: 1 Year of Experience.
• Substitutable Education & Experience: 1 Year of Experience may be substituted by completing a formal training program in Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, or other applicable areas, or by completing the Lexington Medical Center Phlebotomy Apprenticeship.
• Required Certifications/Licensure: None.
• Required Training: None.
Essential Functions:
• Knowledge and Expertise:
• Maintain a high level of skill in performing venipuncture/capillary puncture for blood specimen collection, including on difficult patients, and taking responsibility for recollecting patients when other technicians are unable to procure specimens.
• Meet or exceed all section productivity and specimen quality standards.
• Perform procurement according to appropriate protocols and procedures for all population groups from newborn to geriatric.
• Perform waived and moderate complexity point-of-care testing, including documenting instrument and reagent QC and performing preventative maintenance.
• Maintain knowledge and expertise in the collection of NP Washings/swabs, throat cultures, and other special specimen collections as trained and certified.
• Maintain current knowledge of and follow all laboratory and Laboratory Information System policies and procedures, including the manual backup system.
• Handle patient reception, test accessioning, telephone communications, and report distribution; work the callback queue to ensure delivery of completed results to ordering physicians.
• Assist in the development of procurement training curriculum, continuing education (CE) materials, and Quality Assurance (QA) projects.
• Responsible for training and orienting new employees.
• Stay abreast of all policy and procedural changes, read and sign off in a timely fashion, and encourage others to do so.
• Attend continuing education programs and seminars to remain technically current, as scheduling and budgeting permit.
• Perform testing on proficiency testing samples in the same manner as patient specimens and maintain records.
• Productivity:
• Perform specimen collection as necessary to maintain optimal section workflow.
• Seek out and perform additional assignments during decreased workflow.
• Assign tasks as necessary to assure continuous, smooth section workflow.
• Meet and/or exceed section productivity and turnaround time standards.
• Communication Skills:
• Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance and reporting them to the general (section) supervisor, technical supervisor (Pathologist over sections), clinical consultant (pathologist), or pathologist director.
• Distribute specimen collection supplies and instruct patients on proper specimen collection.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Clinical/Administrative:
• Responsible for proper storage and processing of specimens dispatched to approved reference labs, including collection in proper containers, addition of proper preservatives, and following “special handling” instructions.
• Use collection manager devices for positive patient identification and troubleshoot devices as needed.
• Read Sunquest mailboxes daily for timely information dissemination.
• Maintain adequate phlebotomy supplies on carts and assist with stocking and maintaining inventory; sanitize work area.
• Ensure completion of training checklists for all new employees through direct observation of skills; alert section supervisor to any concerns during training.
• Work as charge technician for the shift, responsible for uninterrupted patient care and coordination of continuous workflow.
• General:
• Work agreed scheduled hours and willingly work unfavorable shifts during times of short staffing/holidays. Participate in call schedule as needed.
• Ensure appropriate Annual Leave (AL) notice is given in a timely manner. Approve time in Kronos at the end of each pay period.
• Perform related and other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as required in emergencies (e.g., fire or disaster).
• Comply with all standard safety policies and procedures required by CLIA, CAP, JCAHO, FDA, DHEC, and OSHA.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.
