Job Description: Refugee Health Team Intern

Overview
This is an unpaid internship opportunity within the refugee health team at CIRI. The primary purpose of the role is to support case managers in their efforts to assist refugees and vulnerable immigrant populations. It offers a valuable chance to gain hands-on experience in critical areas such as refugee resettlement, social services, and client advocacy.

Key Responsibilities
The intern will perform a variety of tasks essential to client support and team operations:
• Assisting clients in understanding and accessing public benefits like Social Security Insurance (SSI) and Medicaid.
• Helping clients navigate the healthcare system, including connecting them with medical providers, scheduling appointments, and arranging transportation.
• Providing guidance on medical billing, insurance coverage, and available payment assistance programs.
• Supporting case managers by tracking client progress and maintaining accurate case notes.
• Conducting outreach to local healthcare providers and community resources to build connections.
• Assisting with administrative tasks, such as data entry and document preparation.
• Arranging and providing transportation for clients to appointments, including driving clients.
• Preparing presentations for health groups targeted at clients.
• Attending or accompanying case managers to client medical appointments.

Qualifications
Candidates should possess the following:
• Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Social Work, Public Health, International Relations, or a related field.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a culturally sensitive manner.
Detail-oriented with good organizational skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is preferred.
Fluency in a second language such as Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, or French is a significant plus.

Internship Details
Commitment: A minimum of 10-15 hours per week for at least 10 weeks. Flexibility is offered based on academic requirements.
Location: The internship is based at the Bridgeport Main Office in Bridgeport, CT.
Supervision: Interns will receive direct supervision and mentorship from experienced case managers, fostering professional development.

This internship is designed to allow individuals to develop professional skills, gain valuable insight into refugee services, and contribute meaningfully to the lives of newly arrived individuals and families.
