Job Description: Vet Tech Student Extern

Overview
Roadside Veterinary Clinic is offering an externship opportunity for a Vet Tech Student. This role is designed for veterinary technician students currently enrolled in an AVMA accredited Vet Tech program, providing practical experience in a professional veterinary setting. The extern will support clinical operations by assisting with patient care, performing routine technical tasks, and observing advanced medical procedures under supervision.

Who You Are (Target Candidate)
This opportunity is specifically for veterinary technician students actively enrolled in an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technician program. The extern will directly interact with veterinary teams, contributing to diagnostic and treatment processes while gaining valuable hands-on experience.

Responsibilities
The Vet Tech Student Extern will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at supporting the clinic’s operations and enhancing their practical skills:
• Assisting credentialed veterinary technicians and veterinarians with clinical procedures.
• Observing and actively participating in the care of a diverse range of medical cases.
• Supporting daily clinical operations, which includes patient intake, treatment administration, and discharge processes.
• Collaborating effectively with various veterinary team members, including assistants, hospital managers, and specialists.
• Adhering strictly to clinical protocols and safety procedures within the veterinary environment.
• Actively participating in mentorship and training sessions designed to enhance clinical knowledge and skills.
• Completing all assigned tasks and responsibilities as directed by the supervising technician or hospital manager.
• Providing constructive feedback through a post-externship survey to contribute to program improvement.
• Performing other duties as assigned that fall within the nature and level of the externship work.

Qualifications
Candidates for this externship must meet the following criteria:
• Must be currently enrolled in an AVMA CVTEA-accredited Veterinary Technician/Nursing program.
• Must be eligible to participate in an externship as a requirement of their academic program.
• Demonstrate strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Possess a willingness to learn and adapt quickly in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Physical Requirements
The role requires certain physical capabilities to perform essential functions:
• Ability to stand for extended periods.
• Capable of safely lifting and restraining animals of various sizes.
• Manual dexterity necessary for handling instruments and performing precise clinical tasks.
• Ability to work comfortably in a clinical environment, which involves exposure to animals, common allergens, and cleaning agents.
