About the company and job description:

Project Independence is a comprehensive, non-residential program serving youth in foster care in Suffolk and Nassau County. The program aims to equip young people between 14 and 21 with the skills and resources needed to live and work independently after leaving foster care. It focuses on youth in foster care regardless of their permanency goals (return to parent, adoption, or independent living). Social work counselors offer individual counseling and group workshops to address each youth’s unique needs and goals. Project Independence collaborates with other community agencies to provide comprehensive support services.

Job Description:

The intern will function as a Social Work Counselor for approximately 3-6 clients throughout the internship. Responsibilities include:

Case Management: Contacting foster parents, DSS caseworkers, schools, and other service providers to coordinate care.
Home Visits: Conducting monthly home visits with each client.
Progress Notes: Writing detailed progress notes to document client interactions and progress.
Independent Living Skills Training: Taking youth out in the community to practice and develop independent living skills (e.g., opening bank accounts, obtaining permits, applying to college).
Therapeutic Counseling: Providing informal therapeutic counseling during home visits.
Workshop Facilitation: Creating and co-facilitating independent living workshops 3-4 times per month.
Client Transportation: Providing weekly transportation for clients to attend workshops.
Foster Parent Training: Facilitating two foster parent trainings during the internship.
• The intern will be required to conduct in-home visits and transport clients in an agency vehicle.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• 2nd Year Master of Social Work (MSW) student
• Valid New York State driver’s license with a safe and responsible driving history to conduct home/field visits and transport clients in an agency vehicle
• Vehicle that is properly registered and insured by New York State and is available for use to conduct home/field visits
• Bilingual Spanish a plus

• LMSW, SIFI Certified
