Job Description:
The Student Nurse Intern position at Phelps Health offers an opportunity to gain experience in a hospital setting under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The intern will perform various duties related to patient treatment and care.
Key Responsibilities:
• Direct Patient Care: Provides basic care, including assisting with hygiene, physical activity, and nutritional needs.
• Monitoring & Data Collection: Collects specimens, performs vital signs, and documents intake and output.
• Basic Procedures: Performs sit baths, postmortem care, application of ted hose/sequential devices, K-pads, ice packs, and binders.
• Quality Improvement: Serves in a lead role for PI initiatives and encourages/supports employee involvement and teamwork for PI initiatives.
• Technical Procedures & Interventions: Performs technical procedures and nursing interventions for which credentialing exists.
• Communication: Communicates closely with the patient’s primary nurse.
• Advanced Skills (with Mentoring):
• Maintains and monitors oxygen therapy
• Inserts and removes urinary catheters
• Discontinues intravenous therapy
• Performs nasopharyngeal suctioning
• Performs dressing changes
• Performs wound care and skin management interventions
• Conducts patient assessments and reviews with primary nurse
• Continuous passive range of motion
• Intramuscular and subcutaneous injections
• NG tube insertion and maintenance
• Educates patient and family in conjunction with primary nurse
• All clinical skills will be performed in conjunction with the mentoring nurse
• Reporting: Notifies the licensed nurse of any changes in patient condition or concerns.
• Documentation: Accurately documents patient care activities in the medical record.
Requirements:
• Education: Currently enrolled in a School of Nursing or an individual who has completed a nursing program but does not meet licensing requirements.
• Experience: Entry-level role; no prior experience required.
• Certification/License: Not applicable
Physical/Mental Demands:
The role requires considerable mental concentration, frequent heavy lifting, turning, and walking. Also involves carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions:
Potential exposure to infectious diseases, radiation, anti-neoplastic agents, and hostile persons. Exposure to communicable diseases through blood and body fluids is frequent.
