Job Description:

This is a Student Nurse Intern position at Phelps Health, working under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The intern will perform various duties in the treatment and care of patients.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Patient Care:
• Assisting with daily hygiene (bathing, hair care, oral hygiene, grooming, skin care).
• Assisting with physical activity (re-positioning, ambulating, ROM, transfer techniques).
• Meeting nutritional needs (preparing patients for meals, assisting with feeding, recording intake, complying with dietary restrictions).
• Collecting specimens, performing vital signs, and documenting intake and output.
• Performing sitz baths, postmortem care, ted hose/sequential application, K-pads, ice packs, and binder application.
PI Initiatives: Serving in a lead role for PI initiatives and encourages/supports employee involvement and teamwork for PI initiatives.
Technical Procedures & Nursing Interventions: Performing technical procedures and nursing interventions for which credentialing exists; practicing within the allowed policy.
Communication: Communicating closely with the patient’s primary nurse.
Monitoring and Assistance: Maintaining and monitoring oxygen therapy, inserting and removing urinary catheters, discontinuing intravenous therapy, performs nasopharyngeal suctioning, performs dressing changes, performs wound care and skin management interventions.
Assessment: Conducts patient assessments and reviews with primary nurse.
Other duties: Continuous passive range of motion, Intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, NG tube insertion and maintenance.
Education: Educates patient and family in conjunction with primary nurse
Mentorship: All clinical skills will be performed in conjunction with the mentoring nurse
Observation and Reporting: Notifying the appropriate licensed nurse immediately of any changes in patient condition or patient/family complaints/concerns.
Documentation: Documenting activities related to patient care in the Medical Record and other designated forms, ensuring accuracy and appropriateness of the documentation.

Qualifications:

Education: Currently enrolled in a School of Nursing or an individual who has completed a nursing program but does not meet licensing requirements.
Experience: Entry-level, no prior experience required.
Certification/License: Not applicable.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

The role requires considerable mental concentration, frequent heavy lifting and turning, and nearly constant walking. It also involves carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions:

The position involves frequent exposure to infectious disease, radiation, anti-neoplastic agents, and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids.
