Job Description: Data Scientist Intern (Finance)

What you’ll do:

As a Data Scientist Intern at American Express, you will be part of a team that uses data science, analytics techniques, and visualization tools to drive the business forward with smart predictions and actionable insights. You will work closely with a team of high-performing colleagues responsible for developing and implementing in-depth data analytics. Your work will be foundational to understanding the business and driving effective strategies.

Specifically, you will:

Innovate and develop new ways to track, analyze, and forecast customer behaviors and trends to inform near- and long-term business strategies.
Develop and enhance machine learning modelling techniques to forecast spend, lend, and other metrics within the team’s purview.
Develop techniques and tools to influence American Express’s decisions on credit, fraud, and recessionary preparedness.
Support balance sheet management by focusing on efficient asset-liability management, liquidity risk management, and capital adequacy.
Play the role of a strategic advisor by guiding on spend trends, converging data through multivariate analyses to parse weak signals and get ahead of inflection points.

This position will be based in New York City.

Qualifications:

Minimum: Currently enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science Engineering, Quantitative Finance, or Statistics with a graduation date between December 2025 and June 2026.
Preferred:
• Hands-on experience dealing with large quantities of complex data and ability to derive actionable insights from those data.
• Proficiency in SQL and Python or PySpark.
• Machine learning development and experience in applying advanced predictive analytics.
• Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or other visualization tools.
• Proven experience communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences, bridging the gap between academic outputs and real-world applications.
• Highly motivated and intellectually curious with a passion for working on “whitespace” projects.
• Intuition for striking the right balance between speed and accuracy.
• Ability to break down/implement complex ideas and create structured output from data in an explainable way.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with distinguished attention to detail.

Compensation:

• $38.45 to $87.00 hourly + sign-on bonus
