Accountant – Lease | Michaels Stores

The Tone:
This is a role at Michaels Stores, located in Irving, TX, supporting the company’s financial operations. As the leading destination for creating and celebrating in North America, Michaels operates over 1,300 stores in 49 states and Canada, and online. The company also owns Artistree, a manufacturer of custom and specialty framing merchandise. This Lease Accountant position is crucial for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of accounting related to lease agreements, maintaining financial compliance with standards like ASC 842 and Sarbanes-Oxley, and supporting accurate financial statements for the company’s extensive retail footprint.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Lease Accounting: Account for lease agreements, ensuring compliance with ASC 842, including recording new leases and handling modifications or renewals.
• Expense Tracking: Track, compile, and accrue triple-net expenses for all US and Canada stores.
• Financial Reconciliation: Reconcile and analyze various general ledger account balances, recommending appropriate actions to management.
• Contract Evaluation: Assist in the annual evaluation of Non-Real Estate Contracts by creating work papers and testing vendor agreements to identify embedded leases.
• Audit & Close Support: Support internal and external audits and assist with month-end closing by booking journal entries and creating variance reports within strict deadlines.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Accounting. Entry-level career with foundational knowledge in U.S. GAAP and SOX.
• Experience: 0 to 2 years of accounting experience.
• Skills: Proficient in Excel. General ledger reconciliation. Journal entry booking.
• Bonus: CPA or CMA preferred. Prior lease accounting experience. Experience with Oracle Financials or other large ERP desired.
