Intern – Accounting | Metropolitan Utilities District

This is a Part-time internship at Metropolitan Utilities District, located in Omaha, Nebraska. As a vital utilities district, the organization provides essential services to its community. This role is crucial for supporting the accounting department’s daily operations, ensuring financial accuracy, and assisting with key reports and special projects that contribute to the District’s overall financial health and operational efficiency.

• Team: Accounting Department, receiving direction from the Manager, Financial Planning & Analysis and the Manager, Disbursement & Cash Management.
• Mission: Support critical accounting functions by reconciling payments, preparing various financial reports, and assisting with essential special projects.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word), enterprise-wide software (e.g., SAP)
What You’ll Actually Do
• Reconciliation: Perform daily reconciliation of financial assistance payments against customer accounts.
• Reporting: Prepare various monthly financial reports to support accounting operations.
• Project Support: Assist with special projects, including updating plant ledgers, gathering supporting documents for insurance claims, and completing annual surveys.
• Journal Entries: Prepare routine journal entries to accurately record monthly bond entries.
• Audit Assistance: Gather necessary data and documentation to support the annual audit process.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Completion of at least one year of college with a study emphasis in accounting, finance, or a related field. Recent graduates must be pursuing post-graduate hours.
• Experience: Proficiency with personal computers and electronic devices, including intermediate familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise-wide software (e.g., SAP).
• Skills: Strong organizational skills with keen attention to accuracy and detail; ability to work independently as a self-starter; capacity to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines; efficient written and verbal communication skills in English; ability to learn new software; and a valid driver’s license.
