This is an unclassified, full-time Accountant position located in Topeka, KS. The Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks is dedicated to managing and conserving the state’s natural resources and providing outdoor recreational opportunities for its residents. This role, situated within the Accounting Section of the Office of the Secretary, plays a vital part in ensuring the agency’s financial operations adhere to state laws and regulations. The Accountant directly contributes to the accurate and compliant processing of procurement card transactions and employee travel reimbursements, supporting the department’s broader mission.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Procurement Card Oversight: Monitors, audits, and approves procurement card transactions by verifying coding required by the State of Kansas and the Agency.
• Travel Reimbursement Auditing: Monitors, audits, and approves all travel reimbursements for the Agency, ensuring adherence to State laws and regulations.
• Financial Compliance: Verifies and corrects account codes, reviews information for accuracy against scanned documentation, and ensures appropriate usage of specified fund coding.
• Internal Support: Serves as the primary point of contact and resource for employees and procurement card reconcilers regarding transaction and travel issues.
• Cross-functional Backup: Provides backup support to other team members and their duties as needed within the Accounting Section.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required, with a preference for an Accounting or Finance degree.
• Experience: One year of professional accounting or auditing work experience is required, and education may be substituted for experience as determined by the agency.
• Skills: Ability to complete tasks with minimal direction; skill in interpreting, applying, and explaining operational policies and procedures; effective oral and written communication; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees.
• Bonus: Experience with the SMART system is a plus.
