Division Chair – Commercial Contracting | Mayo Clinic

The Tone:
This is a hybrid leadership role at Mayo Clinic, requiring proximity to one of three major campuses. Mayo Clinic delivers comprehensive patient care services and manages extensive provider networks, accounting for over $13 billion annually. This role is crucial for defining and executing commercial payer contracting strategies, directly impacting the financial health and strategic reach of the organization.

• Team: Leads a contracting team and collaborates with the Chair, Revenue Strategies and Innovation (RSI).
• Mission: Owns Mayo Clinic’s strategies for commercial payer contracts, ensuring financial performance and alignment with strategic goals across all sites and programs.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Leadership: Lead and maintain an effective contracting team that positions Mayo practices as an attractive provider of health services for payers.
• Strategy Development: Develop and execute commercial payer contracting strategies and initiatives, including specific clinical department objectives.
• Negotiation & Relationship Management: Negotiate financial terms of key contracts directly with payers’ senior-level management and oversee crucial payer relationships.
• Financial Performance: Manage the financial performance of the contract portfolio for the assigned site, functions, and service lines.
• Institutional Resource: Serve as an institutional resource and primary contact for commercial contracting for site Administrators, Physician CEOs/Leaders, and CFOs.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelors’ degree, preferably in a business-related field. Requires a strong foundation and familiarity with healthcare financing, billing/claims, and negotiation strategies.
• Experience: Ten years’ experience in provider-payer contracting with a track record of success and demonstrated leadership skills in healthcare finance or administration.
• Skills: Strategic thought leadership with the ability to lead contracting teams; Excellent communication and interpersonal relations skills, including negotiation; Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to assess contract performance and market trends.
• Bonus: An MBA, MHA or other relevant Master’s degree is preferred. CPA, FSA/ASA (Society of Actuaries), or AAA (Member, Amer. Academy of Actuaries) designations are considered as alternatives to a CPA if the position is finance-focused.
