Staff Accountant | Austal USA

The Tone:
This is a full-time Staff Accountant role at Austal USA, located in Mobile, AL. Austal USA is a leading designer and builder of high-performance ships for the U.S. Navy and other customers, operating within a significant manufacturing environment. This position is crucial for maintaining the financial health and integrity of the company, ensuring all accounting practices align with industry standards and support critical decision-making. The Staff Accountant contributes directly to accurate financial reporting and compliance.

• Mission: Ensures financial accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting for Austal USA entities by performing core accounting responsibilities.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Compliance: Ensures all accounting responsibilities are performed in strict accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
• Month-End Close: Manages crucial month-end closing activities, including preparing journal entries, meticulously reconciling general ledger accounts, and proactively investigating and resolving any discrepancies in account balances.
• Reporting Support: Provides essential assistance to senior accounting personnel in the meticulous preparation and compilation of comprehensive monthly and year-end financial reporting support schedules for all Austal USA entities.
• Audit Coordination: Acts as a key point of contact, coordinating and liaising effectively with both external and internal auditors/reviewers to ensure strict compliance with proper reporting requirements and adherence to all deadlines.
• Asset Management: Contributes to asset integrity by assisting with the accurate tagging and tracking of fixed assets, which may include conducting physical visits to the shipyard, off-site warehouses, and Austal’s West Campus.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Requires a Bachelor of Science or Arts degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, establishing foundational knowledge for this entry-level role.
• Experience: Seeks candidates with 0-3 years of relevant experience in an accounting field, providing a starting point for professional growth within the company.
• Skills: Demonstrates proficient computer and technical aptitude with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; possesses a working knowledge of key financial regulations including FAR, DFAR, IFRS, GAAP, and CAS; exhibits the ability to work collaboratively, with excellent attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective oral and written communication capabilities.
• Bonus: Prior experience in manufacturing or corporate accounting environments is preferred; the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance may be required for certain scope responsibilities within the position.
