Underwriting Trainee | MetLife

This is a full-time training program at MetLife, located in Aurora, IL or Kansas City, MO. • Mission: To successfully complete an underwriting training program to provide underwriting support for new and existing employer group business.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Program Completion: Successfully complete a 3-month Underwriting Academy Program, building an understanding of the employee benefits industry, MetLife’s group benefits portfolio, product risk assessment, underwriting systems, and pricing.
• Mentorship and Learning: Work effectively with a seasoned underwriting professional who serves as a mentor, educating the trainee on MetLife’s various products, processes, systems, and strategies.
• Competency Development: Build upon core competencies including critical thinking and analysis, attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication through structured learning and on-the-job experience.
• Risk Evaluation: Analyze risk by evaluating received customer information including demographics and contractual plan design to ensure meeting both legal and financial requirements for MetLife.
• Premium Determination & Negotiation: Establish required insurance premiums by running manual rate calculations and/or preparing experience-rated quotes, and engage in active negotiation with sales teams to finalize proposals for new and renewing customers.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree, recent college graduate with limited work experience in a related field.
• Experience: Limited work experience in related field.
• Skills: Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and listening), strong analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities, high level of organizational skill and the ability to prioritize and multi-task, functional knowledge of Microsoft products such as Excel and Word, and ability to use approved AI tools.
• Bonus: 1+ years of underwriting experience or related course work, working knowledge of insurance and underwriting, college degree in Math, Business, Finance, or the Financial Services industry.
