Senior Director, Patient Financial Services (Backend) – Corporate 42nd Street | Mount Sinai Health System

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Mount Sinai Health System, located in New York City. Mount Sinai is one of the largest academic medical systems in the New York metro area, dedicated to advancing health through patient care, research, and education. This Senior Director position is a key leadership role within the Patient Financial Services management team, critical for ensuring the financial health of the organization by optimizing revenue cycle operations for hospital-based billing and accounts receivable. The role involves driving operational excellence, mentoring teams, and protecting and optimizing cash collections across the medical center.

• Team: Reports to the Vice President Patient Financial Services, overseeing teams in Billing, Cash application and reconciliation, Denial management, and Third Party follow-up.
• Mission: This person owns the performance of hospital-based Billing and Accounts Receivable across the medical center to ensure financial stability and operational excellence.
• Tech Stack: Revenue cycle and EHR systems

What You’ll Actually Do
• Operations Management: Direct the daily operations of patient accounts teams to reduce days in Accounts Receivable, increase cash collections, decrease bad debt, and eliminate write-offs due to process issues.
• Policy Development: Develop and implement policies and procedures that promote efficiency, data integrity, and regulatory compliance with state and federal guidelines.
• Performance Monitoring: Monitor key performance indicators such as initial and final denials, payer performance, staff productivity, aged AR trends, and billing lags.
• Team Leadership: Lead, coach, and mentor a team of managers, supervisors, and account representatives, overseeing training, performance evaluations, and staff development.
• Interdepartmental Collaboration: Collaborate with departments such as coding, IT, clinical service areas, and appeals to ensure seamless end-to-end revenue cycle performance.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in finance or a business-related field, with a focus on patient accounts and healthcare finance leadership.
• Experience: 10 years of progressively responsible experience in patient accounts, including third party billing rules, follow-up techniques, denial management, and team building, with extensive success in a finance department within a large not-for-profit/academic health system.
• Skills: Financial management, strong leadership, advanced interpersonal, written/verbal communication, and presentation skills, problem-solving, and the ability to build and motivate cross-departmental teams.
• Bonus: Master’s degree preferred
