Accountant II | California State University-Sacramento

The Tone:
This is a full-time, probationary role at California State University-Sacramento, located on-site in Sacramento, CA. This Accountant II position is essential for maintaining the University’s financial record-keeping, ensuring compliance with standard accounting and regulatory practices, and supporting management decision-making through accurate and timely financial information.

• Pay: $5178–$7543 monthly
• Team: Reports to the Operations Manager, Accounting Services, and receives direction from other experienced accountants.
• Mission: This person ensures Sacramento State’s financial record keeping is accurate and compliant, supporting informed financial decisions and reporting.
• Tech Stack: Current word processing and spreadsheet software programs, web browsers, query tools, integrated financial systems, records management systems, PeopleSoft / Oracle Financial System applications

What You’ll Actually Do
• Analysis: Apply accounting principles to analyze complex accounting problems and interpret accounting data.
• Record Keeping: Maintain detailed financial accounting records for the University.
• Reporting: Assist with the preparation of Legal and GAAP financial reports, financial statements, and compliance data.
• Transactions: Process financial transactions such as expenditure transfers, chargebacks, cost recovery, and assignment of General Ledger chart strings.
• Communication: Communicate complex and technical professional accounting information effectively to non-accountants and internal/external stakeholders.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting, business administration, finance, or a closely related field OR a combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge and abilities. Thorough knowledge of GAAP, governmental and fund accounting principles, and internal control methods.
• Experience: Equivalent to two years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience. General understanding of internal control methods, federal financial aid annual reporting requirements, and quarterly grant reporting requirements.
• Skills: Advanced proficiency with current word processing and spreadsheet software programs; ability to prepare clear, accurate financial statements and reports; utilization of problem-solving techniques for complex accounting issues; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively with diverse colleagues.
• Bonus: Knowledge of Federal, State, California State University (CSU), and Sacramento State practices, policies, and procedures. Experience working with PeopleSoft / Oracle Financial System applications.
