Senior Manager-Business Development | Mayo Clinic
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Mayo Clinic, located within 100 miles of San Francisco, CA or Boston, MA. Mayo Clinic Business Development directly supports the organization’s mission by identifying, evaluating, and developing new business opportunities and technologies that improve patient care and outcomes. This role is crucial for leading significant projects, fostering strategic collaborations, and strengthening Mayo Clinic’s position within the global life sciences and healthcare innovation ecosystem.

• Team: Within the Mayo Clinic Business Development department, which is organized into three functional Work Units (Partnerships, Commercialization, Technology Development).
• Mission: Expand Mayo Clinic’s strategic collaborations and investment relationships across biopharma and diagnostics to accelerate innovation and patient impact.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Project Leadership: Lead multiple projects or major portions of multiple large projects, activities, deals, and opportunities for the department.
• Team Management: Assist in organizing new opportunities into appropriate work teams and help with assigning staff to these teams.
• Accountability & Reporting: Serve as a main position of accountability for processes and outcomes related to assigned projects, and communicate project status to department leadership.
• Department Representation: Represent the department in interactions and meetings with other Mayo Clinic departments and leadership, and with external entities as warranted.
• Strategic Expansion: Lead efforts to expand Mayo Clinic’s strategic collaborations and investment relationships across biopharma and diagnostics.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Master’s degree, or an advanced degree (e.g., PhD, MD, JD), in business, science, or a related field. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree is acceptable with additional experience.
• Experience: Five years of specific experience in business development, finance/venture capital, technology transfer, venture management, IP commercialization, licensing, patents, partnerships, business-to-business collaborations, investments, start-up companies, or sourcing partnering opportunities within health care, medical/biotechnology, or financial/venture capital industries. For Commercialization roles, five years directly related to technology licensing is required. A Bachelor’s degree requires a minimum of six years of parallel experience.
• Skills: Ability to perform successfully in a business development/technology commercialization role, navigate complex inter- and intra-organizational issues and relationships, excellent verbal and written communication, strong project management and time management, entrepreneurial/intrapreneurial qualities, strong analytical skills, resourceful, and able to work independently.
• Bonus: Experience with business plan creation, due diligence, market research, marketing plan development, financial pro-forma development and analysis, legal/regulatory issues assessment, technical sales, evaluation of medical technologies, negotiations, contract drafting, and knowledge of science, clinical or bench research, business principles, and relevant laws/regulations. Experience with an academic medical center, mergers and acquisition, financial modeling/analytical valuation, or a Chartered Financial Analyst certification (complete or in progress) is also a plus.
