The Tone:
This is an internship at The City of San Diego, located in San Diego, CA. The City of San Diego is a large municipal organization consisting of more than 30 operational departments, dedicated to serving its residents and managing local government affairs. This role is crucial for students seeking practical experience, as it directly contributes to enhancing local government auditing processes and public administration functions. The intern will gain hands-on experience by supporting critical research, audit, operations, and public engagement initiatives within the Office of the City Auditor.

• Mission: Contribute to projects in research, audit, operations, and public engagement to improve local government auditing and public administration.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Annual Plan Support: Help develop the Annual Citywide Risk Assessment and Audit Work Plan by researching municipal codes, contracts, and department programs that may benefit from review.
• Equity Integration: Research and propose strategies for effectively incorporating equity considerations into the Annual Citywide Risk Assessment process.
• Public Engagement: Develop and assist in implementing strategies to enhance the office’s communication and engagement with the public, including expanding social media presence and organizing outreach events.
• Performance Audit Research: Support ongoing performance audits by researching best practices for City programs, identifying successful approaches implemented by other jurisdictions.
• Financial Review: Assist audit teams by reviewing data and analysis for accuracy, specifically evaluating department budgets and other financial information.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Must be at least 15 ½ years of age and enrolled in a continuing education, traditional education, or training program.
• Experience: Must be a United States citizen or have the current legal right to work in the United States. No specific prior experience in years is required, but an interest in public administration, public policy, accounting, business, communications, or data analytics is beneficial.
• Skills: Research, data analysis, and communication skills to support various audit and public engagement initiatives.
