Paralegal Specialist | United States Attorneys’​ Offices

The Tone:
This role is for a Paralegal Specialist within the United States Attorney’s Office, District of New Mexico. As part of the Department of Justice, the organization is committed to upholding the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution. This position is vital for supporting federal legal investigations and trials, ensuring the efficient preparation of legal documents and effective case management within the federal justice system.

The TL;DR
• Role: Full Time
• Location: In-person, District of New Mexico

• Mission: Support federal legal proceedings by managing case materials, drafting legal documents, and preparing for trials to ensure the effective prosecution of justice.
• Tech Stack: Computer database, tables, charts, graphs.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Case Material Review: Review and organize complex factual material and other documentary data for investigations and trials.
• Legal Document Preparation: Prepare a variety of substantive legal documents, including extradition requests, grand jury and trial subpoenas, and interrogatory requests.
• Data Management: Develop and enter various case material into a computer database and create visual aids like charts, graphs, and tables.
• Trial Preparation: Compile and maintain jury instructions and prepare a wide range of visual exhibits for trial presentations.
• Litigation Support: Provide comprehensive litigation case management and organize cases effectively for court presentation.

The Must-Haves
• Background: This role requires a background in paralegal or legal work.
* For the GS-09 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7, OR a Master’s/equivalent graduate degree (e.g., LLB, J.D.) in a related field (Criminal Justice, Law), OR two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education.
* For the GS-11 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-9, OR a Ph.D./equivalent doctoral degree (e.g., LL.M.) in a related field (Criminal Justice, Law), OR three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education.
• Experience:
* For GS-09: Experience performing paralegal or legal work demonstrating basic knowledge of legal research and ability to interpret legal decisions, including examining legal documents, conducting research, drafting legal documents, and using filing systems.
* For GS-11: Experience performing analytical paralegal or legal work demonstrating practical knowledge of law, litigation, judicial process, and applicable rules, including analyzing legal decisions, conducting legal research, composing legal briefs, and preparing evidence.
• Skills: Legal research, interpretation of legal decisions, drafting legal documents (briefs, pleadings, subpoenas), data entry and database management, preparing visual materials for trial, litigation case management.
