High School Assistant Band Director | Havre Public Schools Education Foundation
The Tone:
This is a seasonal role at Havre Public Schools, located in Havre, MT, serving students from August 2026 to June 2027. The Havre Public Schools Education Foundation supports the district’s mission to provide a comprehensive education. This role is vital to supporting the High School Band Director in delivering instrumental music instruction, fostering student development in music, and contributing to the cultural life of the school community by preparing students for various performances.

• Team: Reports directly to the Band Director and also takes direction from the Principal or Superintendent, working as part of the school’s instrumental music program.
• Mission: To assist the Band Director in planning, organizing, and conducting instrumental music ensembles and developing students’ musical skills, teamwork, and positive citizenship through effective instruction and supervision.
• Tech Stack: Musical instruments, music stands, sound systems, audio/video equipment, computers, music notation and instructional software, copier, telephone/voice mail, printer, projector.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Instruct Students: Provide instruction in instrumental music techniques, musicianship, music theory, and performance skills to students.
• Conduct Rehearsals: Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting rehearsals for concert band, marching band, pep band, jazz band, and other instrumental music ensembles.
• Prepare for Performances: Support students in preparing for concerts, festivals, parades, competitions, and other performances.
• Oversee Student Conduct: Maintain appropriate student discipline, attendance, and conduct during rehearsals, performances, travel, and other band-related activities.
• Manage Equipment: Assist with the inventory, maintenance, storage, and care of instruments, uniforms, music, equipment, and facilities.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Holds or is eligible for a valid Montana teaching certificate with an appropriate music endorsement, demonstrating foundational knowledge of instrumental music instruction, rehearsal techniques, and performance practices required for high school level ensembles.
• Experience: Requires the ability to read and interpret complex music, instructional materials, safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals, coupled with the proven capacity to effectively direct both small and large groups of students in various musical settings.
• Skills: Strong communication skills, both oral and written, for interacting with students, parents, staff, and community members are essential. The ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships, effectively organize time, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines is crucial. This role also requires the capacity to handle stressful situations while maintaining professionalism and upholding the confidentiality of employment and student matters.
