Job Description

Internship: AI for CFD | Dassault Systèmes

The Tone:
This is a paid six month internship/co-op at Dassault Systèmes, located in Waltham, MA. Dassault Systèmes is a 27,555-person organization, and its SIMULIA brand develops best-in-class simulation technologies integrated into the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The Fluids group within SIMULIA focuses on developing the next generation of fluid solver capabilities. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of engineering simulation, AI, and product development, impacting how Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used in many industrial settings worldwide.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Temporary
• Location: In-person, Waltham, MA
• Pay: $23–$40 hourly
• Team: Fluids group in SIMULIA
• Mission: This role aims to validate and test AI-infused fluids technology and emerging CFD workflows to transform engineering simulation.
• Tech Stack: ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM, Simcenter FLOEFD, COMSOL Multiphysics, Python

What You’ll Actually Do
• Perform: Perform industrially-relevant Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to support validation efforts.
• Validate: Validate machine learning surrogate models by comparing them against high-fidelity CFD simulations and experimental data when available.
• Test: Test and validate new CFD solver capabilities, including verification of flow physics across representative engineering applications.
• Evaluate: Evaluate and test emerging AI-driven and agentic CFD workflows, assessing the quality, reliability, and usefulness of AI-generated engineering outputs.
• Collaborate: Work directly with software developers to identify usability issues and performance gaps, and collaborate with product managers to define validation requirements and prioritize improvements.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field, demonstrating a strong understanding of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) fundamentals including Navier-Stokes algorithms and turbulence modeling.
• Experience: Experience with one or more industry-standard CFD tools such as ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM, Simcenter FLOEFD, or COMSOL Multiphysics. Familiarity with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning concepts is also required.
• Skills: Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documenting findings and recommendations. Ability to critically evaluate technical systems and provide actionable feedback for improvements.
• Bonus: Experience applying machine learning to engineering or scientific problems, or developing/validating surrogate or reduced-order models. Familiarity with large language models, generative AI, agentic AI systems, multi-agent systems, or agentic workflows. Exposure to simulation automation, scripting, or workflow orchestration, and experience with Python and scientific computing libraries.
