Production System Engineer Project Intern (Server DevOps) | ByteDance

The Tone:
This is a Project Intern position at ByteDance, a company that inspires creativity and enriches life through a suite of products including TikTok, Toutiao, and CapCut, making it easier for people to connect with and create content. Located in the United States, this role is vital for the Server Fleet Operations team, which manages the complete lifecycle of servers within ByteDance’s self-built data centers across the United States and Europe. The work ensures that ByteDance’s global infrastructure operates reliably and efficiently at scale, contributing to the delivery of critical services.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Server Operations: Get hands-on with the deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of server fleets, including CPU and GPU infrastructure.
• Automation Development: Write scripts and small tools using Python, Bash, or similar languages to automate repetitive operational tasks.
• System Troubleshooting: Learn to diagnose and resolve real Linux issues across OS, hardware, storage, networking, and performance.
• AI Infrastructure Support: Explore GPU and AI infrastructure, contributing to the development and maintenance of tools that ensure its reliability.
• Data Analysis: Dig into infrastructure data and metrics to identify trends and discover opportunities for improvement.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Experience: Some exposure to server hardware, firmware (BIOS/UEFI), or system architecture, coupled with hands-on experience from projects, labs, internships, open-source work, or competitions.
• Skills: Basic Linux administration and troubleshooting, scripting/programming (Python, Bash, Go, or similar), and a basic understanding of hardware, OS concepts, networking, or distributed systems.
• Bonus: Curiosity about AI agents, LLMs, or AI-powered automation; strong problem-solving instincts; and effective communication skills for team collaboration.
