Sign Language Educational Interpreter II | Frederick County Public Schools

The Tone:
This is a full-time, 10-month position at Frederick County Public Schools, located in Frederick, MD. Frederick County Public Schools is a vital educational organization serving its community’s students, faculty, and staff. This role is essential for ensuring effective and accurate sign language communication for students, staff, families, and community stakeholders eligible for services, fostering an inclusive and accessible educational environment.

The TL;DR
• Role: Full Time
• Type: 10-month position (190 days / year)
• Location: In-person, Frederick, MD
• Pay: $36.56 per hour; starting
• Team: Reports directly to the Coordinator of Interpreting Services
• Mission: Facilitates communication for deaf/hard-of-hearing individuals and other eligible stakeholders within the school system and community.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Interpreting Services: Interprets and transliterates information, accurately conveying thought, intent, and spirit in the communication mode determined by IEP teams for students or preferred by other stakeholders.
• Logistics & Advocacy: Coordinates facility logistics by positioning self optimally for clear line of sight and advocates for the use of closed captioning and other technology devices.
• Professional Development: Uses preparation time effectively to acquire topical content and technical vocabulary, collaborates with other FCPS interpreters, and attends provided professional development sessions.
• Ethical Compliance: Complies with the Code of Ethics established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf in all interpreting practices.
• Educational Support: Participates in providing educators general information about social, emotional, and cultural aspects of individuals who are deaf/hard of hearing and shares best practices for utilizing interpreting services.

The Must-Haves
• Background: High School diploma or equivalent; completion of an interpreter training program from a higher education institute.
• Experience: Three (3) years of successful experience as a sign language interpreter may be used in lieu of an interpreter training program; certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS), Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), or National Association of the Deaf (NAD).
• Skills: Fluent in Sign Language; ability to accurately interpret/transliterate information; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
• Bonus: Background in an educational setting; classroom interpreting experience; familiarity with FCPS policies, goals, and programs.
