2027 Summer Project Engineer Intern | Pepper Construction Group

The Tone:
This is a summer internship at Pepper Construction Group, located in the Chicagoland Area. Pepper Construction is a national general contracting and construction management firm with nearly 100 years of expertise, primarily serving the private sector as a family-owned company. This role offers students an opportunity to gain real-life experience as a General Contractor, learning fundamental aspects of project management in both field and office settings. Interns will contribute to active projects and participate in a competitive intern project, building a strong foundation for a career in construction.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Seasonal
• Location: In-person, Chicagoland Area
• Pay: $20–$24 hourly
• Team: Paired with a Project Manager and/or Superintendent on one of our construction teams.
• Mission: To experience life as a General Contractor and learn about the construction industry through hands-on involvement and training.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Process project submittals to ensure compliance and progress.
• Perform take-offs for various project components.
• Prepare budgets and cost estimates for project activities.
• Attend job site and owner meetings to understand project dynamics.
• Participate in training sessions, jobsite tours, safety briefings, and an intern project competition.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Current college student entering their Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year studying Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or Construction Engineering.
• Experience: No specific years of prior experience are required.
• Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills; strong computer skills to learn and utilize new technology quickly; the confidence to work independently; the desire to collaborate as part of a team; skilled at multitasking while maintaining attention to detail.
• Bonus: Reliable self-transportation to and from work-related activities; ability to work in the Chicagoland area including far north and/or south suburbs; availability to participate in the 12-week program from Memorial Day to Mid-August.
