Mission Support Specialist | U.S. Customs and Border Protection
The Tone:
This is a federal government position with the Department of Homeland Security, located in St Albans City, VT. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the sole organization responsible for securing the nation’s borders, facilitating trade, and enforcing U.S. laws. This role is crucial for maintaining operational effectiveness and ensuring program compliance by providing administrative guidance and technical advice across various mission support functions within a Field Office or Port of Entry. The Mission Support Specialist contributes directly to CBP’s core values of vigilance, service to country, and integrity by supporting management decision-making and continuous improvement efforts.

• Mission: To provide essential administrative guidance and technical advice in mission support functional areas to enhance operational effectiveness and program compliance.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Analyze: Analyze complex administrative issues and recommend solutions to improve operational effectiveness.
• Plan: Plan and execute projects and studies to enhance mission support services and achieve organizational goals.
• Interpret: Interpret laws, regulations, and policies to resolve challenges and ensure program compliance.
• Collaborate: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to coordinate activities and implement process improvements.
• Prepare: Prepare reports, guidance, and recommendations to support management decision-making and continuous improvement.
The Must-Haves
• Background: For GS-07, a Bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) or one year of full-time graduate education in a relevant field. For GS-09, two or more years of full-time graduate education, a Master’s (or higher) degree, or an LL.B. or J.D. demonstrating relevant skills. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
• Experience: For GS-07, one year of specialized experience collecting and reviewing information for administrative tasks, assisting with process improvements, contributing to policy effect evaluation, completing assignments, and communicating procedural details. For GS-09, one year of specialized experience analyzing administrative information to resolve moderately complex issues, participating in support service refinements, examining regulatory/policy impact, applying methods to address conflicting data, and coordinating program areas. Combinations of qualifying education and experience are accepted.
• Skills: Analytical problem-solving, project planning and execution, regulatory and policy interpretation, stakeholder coordination, and clear communication in preparing reports and guidance.
