Store Executive Intern – Kansas City | Target

The Tone:
This is a paid, full-time internship at Target, located in Kansas City, starting in Summer 2027. Target is a prominent retail company dedicated to helping all families discover the joy of everyday life, brought to life through its values and culture. This internship plays a vital role in developing future retail leaders by offering a hands-on training program designed to prepare individuals for the Executive Team Leader (Assistant Store Manager) role. You will gain a realistic preview of store leadership, impacting the guest experience and overall store performance.

• Mission: This role is designed to immerse individuals in the fundamentals of retail store leadership, focusing on driving guest experience, operational efficiency, and team performance, while understanding Target’s broader retail business model.
• Tech Stack: Handheld scanners, multiple frequency devices, cash register operations, other technology equipment as directed.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Drive daily operations by leading team members on the salesfloor and backroom, ensuring alignment on business priorities, stocking shelves, building displays, and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
• Develop leadership skills by working closely with an Executive Team Lead (ETL) mentor and other store leaders, gaining a comprehensive understanding of their roles and all business areas to develop acumen.
• Cultivate team performance through teaching, coaching, training, providing timely performance feedback, addressing team member concerns, and removing operational hurdles to ensure goal attainment.
• Contribute to store strategy by planning daily goals, organizing operational plans, leading daily huddles with peer and leadership teams, and reviewing business reporting and guest insights to identify opportunity areas.
• Deliver exceptional guest service by empowering team members, ensuring product knowledge, resolving guest issues, creating a welcoming experience by greeting guests, and fostering an inclusive and secure culture.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. This internship is designed for individuals with a strong interest in pursuing a career in retail management, specifically within Target stores, and a desire to understand the operational complexities and leadership responsibilities involved.
• Experience: No specific years of experience are required for this internship. However, candidates who have previous retail experience, leadership skills, and demonstrate team-oriented thinking will find this role particularly relevant. The ability to manage a workload effectively and prioritize tasks independently is also valuable.
• Skills: Effective communication skills for interacting with guests and team members, foundational guest service principles, problem-solving and resolution capabilities, an understanding of retail business fundamentals, and adaptability to current technology needs.
