Fall Legal Intern | Lawyers’​ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law

The Tone:
This is an internship at Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, located in Washington, DC. The Lawyers’ Committee is one of the nation’s leading national racial justice legal organizations, founded in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy. The organization uses legal advocacy to achieve racial justice, fighting inside and outside the courts. This role supports the Lawyers’ Committee’s crucial work to ensure that Black people and other people of color have the voice, opportunity, and power to make the promises of our democracy real. Interns contribute to projects that make impactful change and are provided with professional and personal development opportunities during their term.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Part-time, working 10-15 hours per week with a full course load, or 20 hours per week without. The term is from September 21st, 2026, to December 4th, 2026.
• Location: Hybrid, Washington, DC (students can commute into the office or work remotely).
• Mission: This intern will support the Lawyers’ Committee’s core mission to achieve racial justice through targeted legal advocacy and dedicated public service.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Legal Research: Conduct thorough legal research across various platforms to support ongoing cases and departmental projects.
• Document Drafting: Assist attorneys in drafting a range of legal documents, ensuring accuracy and adherence to legal standards.
• Client Interaction: Communicate effectively with clients, under the direct supervision of experienced attorneys, to gather information or convey updates.
• Legal Analysis: Analyze complex legal issues, synthesizing findings into clear summaries and providing actionable recommendations based on comprehensive research.
• Case File Management: Organize, maintain, review, and summarize case files and other critical legal documents, contributing to efficient workflow.
• Administrative Support: Offer administrative support to attorneys, assisting with day-to-day tasks that underpin the legal team’s operations.

The Must-Haves
• Background: This role is for a legal intern currently enrolled in law school, demonstrating an interest in public service, government or congressional affairs, and public policy.
• Experience: Ideal candidates possess the ability to work independently on assigned tasks and projects.
• Skills: Applicants must have excellent research and writing skills, alongside a deep passion for civil rights which is essential to carry out the duties and responsibilities effectively.
• Bonus: Preference is given to students attending colleges and universities in or around the metropolitan District of Columbia region, or those participating in externship or academic exchange programs. Interns also have the option to help various program offices, including Digital Justice, Economic Justice, Fair Housing, Educational Opportunities, Voting Rights, and Public Policy.
