Intern, Legal Research | NASTAD

The Tone:
This is a seasonal internship at NASTAD, located remotely with the option for in-person or hybrid work in Washington, D.C. NASTAD is a leading non-partisan, non-profit association that represents public health officials administering HIV and hepatitis programs across the U.S. This role is vital for supporting public health efforts by providing essential legal research and policy analysis to navigate federal, state, and local laws and policies related to HIV and hepatitis programs.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Seasonal, Temporary (20 hours per week, September through December)
• Location: Remote (flexible for in-person/hybrid in Washington, D.C. adhering to ET hours)
• Pay: $20 hourly
• Team: Policy and Legislative Affairs team, reporting to the Manager, Legal Research
• Mission: This role supports health department efforts to navigate federal, state, and local laws and policies related to HIV and hepatitis programs.
• Tech Stack: Westlaw, Microsoft Office applications

What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Conduct statutory and regulatory research on topics related to HIV and hepatitis policy issues and legislation.
• Develop: Assist in creating resources, reports, tools, and other materials based on conducted legal research.
• Update: Execute amendments to existing NASTAD statutory and regulatory research products to ensure information accuracy.
• Oversee: Manage updates to NASTAD’s 50-state jurisdictional analysis of HIV data privacy and HIV transmission laws.
• Support: Complete other assigned duties and special projects as needed by the team.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Minimum one year of law school completed and currently pursuing a Juris Doctorate. This role requires foundational knowledge in legal research and writing.
• Experience: Completed at least one Legal Research and Writing course through a Juris Doctorate program. Preference is given for one previous intern or work experience in a legal office.
• Skills: Strong research, writing, and communication skills; familiarity and skill in legal research using Westlaw; capability to manage multiple priorities independently while maintaining strong attention to detail.
• Bonus: Interest in working with a national HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis public health organization and with the communities most impacted by these epidemics.
