HR/Safety Intern | IKO North America
The Tone:
This is a part-time internship at IKO North America, located in Hagerstown, MD, requiring the candidate to be local to Maryland State. IKO Industries Ltd. is a well-established Canadian-owned and operated market leader in the manufacturing of roofing and building materials, with a long history of success and global production facilities. This role is crucial for supporting both human resources functions, including recruitment and employee relations, and the advancement of critical safety initiatives within the plant operations. The intern will directly contribute to the company’s commitment to quality, integrity, and trustworthiness by helping maintain a safe and effective working environment and supporting its valued employees.

• Mission: To assist with recruitment and employee relations while driving progress in the plant’s Life Critical Program.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Safety Program Management: Collaborate closely with the Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Specialist and various plant team leaders (such as Supervisors, Reliability Engineers, and Millwrights) to actively drive progress within the Life Critical Program (LCP).
• HR Support: Provide comprehensive assistance to the HR Coordinator across various functions, including recruitment efforts, managing employee relations inquiries, and contributing to special projects as needed.
• LCP Development: Conduct a thorough review of all current needs for the Life Critical Program (LCP), ensuring that affected departments are equipped with the necessary tools for successful completion, and meticulously organize, plan, and map out the project management for each LCP step.
• Safety Documentation: Engage directly with department members to gather information, take relevant pictures, draft clear Safety Work Instructions (SWIs), and complete all associated data entry for critical safety concerns.
• Procedure & Data Management: Collect and meticulously analyze data from the plant floor to facilitate effective communication and documentation, in addition to reviewing, developing, and updating existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The Must-Haves
• Background: Student (Junior or Senior level) specializing in Industrial, Mechanical, Human Resources, Business Administration, or Occupational Health/Safety programs.
• Experience: Proficiency in advanced MS Excel functionality, MS Word, MS Power Point, and Adobe Acrobat.
• Skills: Demonstrates critical thinking, a high degree of organization, and fluency in both spoken and written English.
• Bonus: Prior health, safety, and/or environmental experience, along with troubleshooting capability.
