PHARMACY INTERN | UNM Hospital

This is a PRN (as-needed) internship at UNM Hospital, located in Albuquerque, NM. UNM Hospital is a healthcare provider committed to patient care and safety. This role is crucial for supporting the inpatient pharmacy operations by assisting in the accurate compounding and dispensing of medications, directly contributing to patient well-being across all age groups.

• Mission: Compound and dispense medications, provide clerical support, and ensure adherence to patient safety protocols.
What You’ll Actually Do
• PRESCRIPTIONS/ORDERS: Compound and prepare various medication forms, including emulsions, liquids, powders, and ointments, by precisely weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients using appropriate equipment.
• PATIENT CARE: Accurately fill prescriptions from bulk stock and package medications into bottles, capsules, and other forms according to specified amounts.
• ADMINISTRATION: Provide essential clerical support, which includes typing labels for medications and IV solutions, pricing patient medications, completing patient charge slips, and managing the filing of physician orders and controlled substance usage forms.
• SUPPLIES: Manage pharmaceutical inventory by receiving and stocking ordered supplies, as well as making rounds to collect orders and deliver prepared prescriptions to relevant areas.
• PATIENT SAFETY: Actively follow all patient safety policies and procedures, identify and report potential risks or errors, and encourage patients to participate in their own care by asking questions.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Student who has completed the 1st semester of the college of Pharmacy curriculum.
• Experience: No minimum experience required for this role.
• Skills: Ability to accurately weigh, measure, mix, and compound pharmaceutical ingredients; proficiency in clerical tasks such as typing, filing, and providing phone support; strong commitment to following patient safety policies and procedures.
• Credentials: Must obtain CPR for Healthcare/BLS Provider or Professional Rescuers certification within 30 days of hire and secure a Licensed Pharmacy Intern credential in New Mexico within 90 days of hire.
