The Tone:
This is an internship at Joby Aviation, located in San Carlos, CA. The company is developing a piloted electric air taxi that takes off vertically, aiming to revolutionize urban transportation. This role is crucial for generating vital insights into battery performance, directly contributing to the certification and commercial launch of the aircraft. The successful candidate will help ensure the safety and efficiency of the company’s advanced battery systems.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Temporary
• Location: In-person, San Carlos, CA
• Pay: $23–$33.25 hourly
• Team: Part of the battery team, working exclusively with the cell testing team.
• Mission: Generate insight into battery performance for VTOL electric aircraft to support product development.
• Tech Stack: Battery cyclers, potentiostats, electrochemical cells, Python, MATLAB, Maccor, Arbin, Neware

What You’ll Actually Do
• Research and Experimentation: Conduct research and experiments on different batteries using cycling equipment.
• Characterization: Conduct experiments or measurements for individual cells to characterize their physical and electrochemical properties.
• Data Analysis and Communication: Develop methods and tools to analyze data sets and communicate key findings to multidisciplinary teams for product development.
• Materials Investigation: Occasionally complete cell teardowns for materials investigation.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with the equipment design team to facilitate project equipment requirements, the data science team to consume and produce findings from large data sets, and lab technicians to facilitate lab functions, operation, experiment setup, and monitoring.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Pursuing a B.S. degree or above in Electrochemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, heading into junior or senior year of undergraduate degree or above at the time of the internship. Knowledge of Li-ion cell chemistry and mechanisms is required.
• Experience: Experience with testing equipment such as battery cyclers, potentiostats, and electrochemical cells.
• Skills: Strong attention to detail, documentation, implementation of operating procedures, ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and projects, and capability of prioritizing safe practice in the workplace.
• Bonus: Experience with cell teardowns and characterization techniques, glove box or cell fabrication experience, proficiency at setting up and writing scripts for battery cycling equipment (Maccor, Arbin, Neware, etc.), history of experiments to obtain data supporting a BMS and/or performance modeling of a cell level technology, expertise in cell fabrication, experience with large form factor cell/pack handling, and prior research or intern experience on Li-ion cells.
