Entry Level Journeyman Roofing

Job Description

This document provides a detailed description of the Entry Level Journeyman Roofing position within The School District of Philadelphia’s Facilities Central Maintenance department.

Job Summary

This is an entry-level journeyman position focused on roofing work related to the maintenance and construction of various types of roofs. The employee will be responsible for repairing and replacing diverse roof coverings, as well as installing and replacing rainspouts, gutters, lightning rods, and lightning rod cables.

Essential Functions

• Repairs and replaces various roof coverings, including slate, tile, or rubberoid roofs.
• Performs basic carpentry tasks as required for roofing activities.
• Installs and repairs rain spouts and gutters.
• Addresses leaks on roofs and replaces damaged roof sections.
• Waterproofs foundations, roofs, and basements.
• Repairs and maintains roof ventilators.
• Installs and repairs lightning rods and their associated cables.
• Transports materials to and from job sites.
• Utilizes ladders or scaffolds as necessary for job completion.
• Lifts heavy materials and equipment to roof level when required.
• Operates the kettle for roofing applications.
• Cuts and rolls roofing material.
• Mops roofing paper onto the roof surface.
• Repairs and installs copper drain pans.
• Performs soldering on various metals, including lead.
• Executes diverse types of sheet metal work.
• Estimates material requirements and places orders for various jobs.

Other Functions

• Performs additional related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable Knowledge: Understanding of the principles, methods, and procedures governing the roofing trade.
• Considerable Knowledge: Awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions pertinent to the roofing trade.
• Knowledge: Familiarity with current materials and tools used in roofing, such as rubber roofs and durbagum.
• Skill: Proficiency in the proper care and use of roofing tools.
• Ability: Capacity to accurately follow both oral and written instructions.
• Ability: Capability to prepare necessary records and reports detailing work performed.

Minimum Requirements

• Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Experience: Three years of experience learning the roofing trade as an apprentice.
