Job Description
Job Title: Nursing Graduate – Emergency Room (Unlicensed)
The Nursing Graduate works under the direct line-of-sight supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) in the clinical setting, actively participating in the patient care delivery process. This role also involves orienting to the RN assignment, excluding independent nursing care. Participation in medication administration is possible under the direct supervision of a licensed RN.
Program and Licensure Requirements
This position is designed for individuals enrolled in the Intermountain Nurse Residency program who are working towards preparing for, testing, and passing the State Boards examination to obtain an RN license.
- The Nursing Graduate job can be utilized for up to 12 weeks.
- After this 12-week period, or if the Nursing Graduate fails the State Board exam a second time, the employee can no longer remain in the Nurse Graduate job.
- Employees in this situation can apply for any open jobs for which they qualify, including those requiring a certification they currently hold (e.g., CNA).
- Failure to either pass State Boards within the timeframe or secure another qualified position will result in termination.
- Registered Nurse graduates must be enrolled and have started coursework in the Intermountain Nurse Residency program before providing direct patient care, even under the supervision of a licensed RN.

- Unit Size: 24-bed unit specializing in Emergency/Trauma Care, including pediatrics.
- Trauma Level: Level IV trauma center.
- Specializations: Stroke and STEMI receiving facility.
- Patient Volume: Provides emergency care for over 34,000 diverse patients per year.
- Team Environment: Works alongside an engaged group of Emergency Physicians who emphasize education and collaborative patient care. Critical Care Technicians (CCT’s) work alongside bedside nurses.

Entry Pay Rates
- New Grad RN – Unlicensed: $31.95/hour
- Registered Nurse – Licensed: $34.53/hour

Note: An RN with more than one year of nursing experience is not required to attend the nurse residency program and should apply to “Experienced RN” positions only.
Essential Functions (Under Direct Supervision of an RN)
- Demonstrates understanding of the steps in the nursing process and how the patient plan of care is developed, implemented, and revised to meet patient needs.
- Assessment: Collects patient data (e.g., vital signs), reports significant changes in patient condition, and completes accurate documentation.
- Planning: Observes and discusses prioritization of patient needs and the development/modification of the interdisciplinary plan of care.
- Implementation: Observes the implementation of the patient plan of care, considering specialized needs such as physical, emotional, social, age, and ethnic factors.
- Evaluation: Reports patient responses to treatments and collaborates on changes requiring modification of nursing interventions.
- Participates in patient/family education needs as determined by assessments, diagnosis, learning readiness, and requests, utilizing other disciplines as appropriate.
- Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for patient care delivery within the defined role, routinely observing and discussing all aspects of care with the RN.
- Recognizes and demonstrates legal/ethical implications of care delivery by practicing as a Nursing Resident, complying with regulatory standards, completing accurate documentation, and maintaining confidentiality.
- Achieves Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in a timely manner per Intermountain Health standards and expectations, and completes orientation and training requirements, including successful progression through and completion of the Nursing Residency program.

Minimum Qualifications
- Successful completion of a recognized and accredited Nursing (RN) education program (education will be verified).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Healthcare Providers.
Physical Requirements
- Vision: Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
- Communication: Frequent interactions requiring verbal communication and the ability to hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, especially during emergencies.
- Manual Dexterity: Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use and typing for documentation, accessing information, and medication preparation.
- Lifting/Movement: Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment (varying weights, up to and including heavy items).
- Mobility: Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining/distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.).
- Standing: May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
- Driving (if applicable): For roles requiring driving, expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
