Natural Resource Worker | Albemarle County Parks & Rec

The Tone:
This is a temporary, part-time, non-exempt role at Albemarle County Parks & Rec, located in Albemarle County, Virginia. The department is dedicated to the maintenance of active community parks, grounds, and buildings. This position plays a vital role in natural resource management and restoration efforts, specifically focusing on the control of invasive species to preserve and enhance the county’s natural landscapes.

The TL;DR
• Role: Part Time
• Type: Temporary, Non-Exempt
• Location: In-person, Albemarle County, VA
• Pay: $18 hourly
• Mission: Control invasive plants and restore native ecosystems within active community parks.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Invasive Control: Manage invasive plants through manual removal and targeted herbicide application.
• Project Monitoring: Monitor and assess natural resource restoration projects to ensure progress and success.
• Revegetation Support: Support revegetation initiatives by planting trees, overseeding, and installing native plant species.
• Species Identification: Identify and track non-native invasive plant species across parklands and identify native species.
• Project Logistics: Coordinate logistics, including organizing, delivering, and procuring tools and supplies for field projects.
• Community Engagement: Conduct outreach to staff and citizens regarding invasive species issues.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Some experience in invasive plant management and basic knowledge of local native flora, fauna, geology, and ecology specific to Albemarle County.
• Experience: Prior experience in invasive plant management and possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license.
• Skills: Ability to safely and efficiently operate power equipment, various hand tools, and chainsaws, alongside an understanding of Field Safety procedures relevant to outdoor work.
