The South Lorain Public Library, part of the Lorain Library System, hosts a Food Literacy program and an urban farm. This urban farm is dedicated to providing quality local produce to the community.

Position Details

Overview

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our local library urban farm. This internship offers a unique opportunity for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in sustainable farming practices and supporting food justice initiatives on the farm.

Responsibilities

  • Farm and Crop Maintenance:
    • Assist the farm manager with essential tasks such as planting, cultivation, watering, weeding, and harvesting.
    • Perform routine maintenance tasks to ensure a well-functioning farm environment.
  • Operations Assistance:
    • Aid in maintaining scheduling and record-keeping for volunteers, interns, staff, and maintenance activities.
    • Participate in data collection activities, including monitoring crop growth, recording weather conditions, maintaining accurate records of farm activities, and documenting the food justice impact within the local community.
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the farm team manager and staff to ensure efficient and effective operations.
    • Collaborate on various tasks and projects as needed to support the farm’s mission.

Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for sustainable agriculture and a strong desire to learn about farm operations.
  • Passion for food justice, healthy foods, community-building, and civic agriculture.
  • Physical ability to engage in farm-related tasks, including lifting, bending, and prolonged outdoor work.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Willingness to adapt and take on new challenges in a dynamic farm environment.
  • Basic knowledge of agriculture is a plus, though not required.
