Digital Inclusion Intern | International Rescue Committee (IRC)

The Tone:
This is an internship at the International Rescue Committee (IRC), located in Salt Lake City, UT. The IRC is a global humanitarian organization dedicated to helping people whose lives have been shattered by conflict and disaster. They restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to those in need. This role is crucial for supporting the IRC’s Digital Inclusion program, which aims to bridge the digital divide for refugees and new Americans. The intern will ensure clients gain meaningful access to essential technology and digital literacy skills, helping them thrive in today’s digital world.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Temporary (10 weeks minimum, 10-15 hours per week)
• Location: Salt Lake City, UT
• Team: Reports to the Education Program Manager and the Digital Literacy and Access VISTA.
• Mission: Ensure refugee families and individuals gain meaningful access to the internet, digital devices, and essential STEM learning opportunities.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Device Distribution: Support the process of distributing computers and other digital devices to refugee clients.
• Technology Training: Provide one-on-one and small group training sessions on smartphone and computer basics.
• Program Assistance: Assist with the implementation of digital literacy and STEM education programs for both youth and adults.
• Content Creation: Collaborate in creating short educational videos designed to promote digital learning and awareness.
• Technical Support: Troubleshoot technical issues and help clients navigate common device challenges they encounter.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Commitment to at least 10 weeks of service, with a minimum of 10 hours per week (15 preferred). Must be comfortable with in-person visits to clients’ homes and community sites.
• Experience: Previous experience teaching technology basics or troubleshooting devices is preferred. Experience working with refugees or diverse communities is a plus.
• Skills: Self-motivated, dependable, flexible, attentive to detail, strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and manage time efficiently, fluent in English.
• Bonus: Fluency in additional refugee languages such as Swahili, Arabic, or Dari is highly valued.
