What You’ll Actually Do
• Inmate Supervision: Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas, ensuring their safety and attending to their needs.
• Security & Patrol: Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks, utilizing various security equipment.
• Inmate Processing: Process new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
• Behavior Observation: Observe inmate behavior, counsel inmates and families about problems, and evaluate inmates on hygiene and attitudes for submission to the counseling department.
• Incident Response: Respond to and resolve potentially dangerous situations, such as fights, through persuasion or the appropriate use of physical force.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school, along with one year of full-time adult correctional security work. Applicants must be at least eighteen years of age, a U.S. citizen, and demonstrate good moral character.
• Experience: One year of full-time adult correctional security work with a federal, state, or an American Correctional Association (ACA) accredited local agency. Qualifying full-time employment as a Correctional Officer with the State of Tennessee may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
• Skills: Knowledge of public safety and security principles, active learning and listening, critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing for reports, and operating security equipment including firearms and electronic gates.
• Required: Ability and willingness to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons; successful completion of a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening; passing of a physical and psychological evaluation; and completion of a prescribed course at the Tennessee Correction Academy upon appointment. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required for some positions.
