On Call Early Career Archaeology Field Technician | WSP

The Tone:
This is an early career on-call position at WSP, primarily working on projects in Arizona and New Mexico. This role is an exciting opportunity to join the Earth & Environment Cultural Resource Team, contributing to solving complex cultural resource challenges for clients and ensuring project compliance with critical federal, state, and local regulations.

• Team: Earth & Environment Cultural Resource Team, reporting to supervisory field staff and senior archaeologists
• Mission: Conduct fieldwork and collect digital data to support cultural resource investigations and reporting for project compliance.
• Tech Stack: SharePoint, Microsoft Office suite, various digital data collection software and hardware, state IMACS forms

What You’ll Actually Do
• Fieldwork: Complete assigned survey and mitigation tasks, including testing, data recovery, and monitoring.
• Data Collection: Conduct fieldwork and collect digital data to prepare for reporting findings.
• Assessments: Participate in Class I-Class III assessments and develop avoidance recommendations.
• Compliance: Contribute to heritage/cultural resource investigations and ensure project compliance with critical federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including NEPA, NHPA, and NAGPRA.
• Material Identification: Identify and analyze a wide variety of archaeological materials from prehistoric and historic-period sites in the field.

The Must-Haves
• Background: BA/BS degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or a related field; MS/MA preferred. This is an early career role focused on cultural resources, environmental regulations, and North American archaeology, with specific knowledge of NHPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, and relevant state laws.
• Experience: 0-1 years of professional experience in researching, analyzing, developing, and managing archaeological and historic preservation plans, staff, and resources. Candidates should have experience with various digital data collection software and hardware to support fieldwork and data preparation.
• Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills for team environments, coupled with strong oral and written communication abilities. Proficiency in using SharePoint and the Microsoft Office suite is required. The role demands experience identifying and analyzing a wide variety of archaeological materials from prehistoric and historic-period archaeological sites in the field.
• Bonus: Previous work experience in the western US. Experience with large-scale terrestrial survey projects. Specific Great Basin and/or Southwestern fieldwork experience is preferred.
