Patient Care Specialist

Position Overview
St. Mary’s Medical Center is seeking dedicated and compassionate Patient Care Specialists. This vital role involves assisting in a broad range of patient care activities, always in strict conformance with Medical Center policies and procedures. The Patient Care Specialist operates under the direct supervision and guidance of a Registered Nurse, contributing significantly to the delivery of high-quality, safe, and effective care for patients across all age groups, from neonates to geriatrics.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Support and Monitoring:
- Demonstrate the ability to properly perform a 12-lead EKG, accurately recognizing tracings, and promptly bringing any abnormalities to the attention of the Charge Nurse.
- Collect blood samples from patients using appropriate techniques, including venipuncture or skin puncture.
- Accurately measure and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen saturation), escalating any abnormalities to the nursing staff immediately.
- Monitor and meticulously document patient intake and output, reporting any significant deviations or concerns.
- Provide basic respiratory support as directed, which may include setting up oxygen delivery systems.
- Assist with various clinical procedures within the established scope of training and as delegated by the Registered Nurse.
- Direct Patient Care and Activities of Daily Living (ADLs):
- Assist in providing direct, safe, and effective patient care designed to meet the physical, spiritual, and psychological needs of patients, ranging in age from neonate to geriatrics.
- Assist patients with essential Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including hygiene (bathing, oral care), grooming, dressing, and mobility.
- Support patient nutrition, which includes providing meal assistance and feeding as appropriate and safely.
- Provide basic skin care monitoring, promptly observing and reporting any changes in skin condition, such as redness, breakdown, or irritation.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Accurately and timely enter all required documentation into the electronic medical record (EMR) or relevant database.
- Observe patients closely and report all pertinent information, changes in patient condition, and patient responses to care to the Patient Care Nurse or Charge Nurse.
- Document thoroughly and accurately, providing a clear and concise description of the patient’s progress and care provided.
- Report maintenance concerns or faulty equipment promptly according to facility policy to ensure a safe environment.
- Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
- Provide appropriate and clear explanations to patients prior to performing procedures, always within the established scope of training.
- Communicate effectively, professionally, and empathetically with patients and their families, fostering trust and understanding.
- Utilize interpersonal techniques that facilitate productive and collaborative working relationships with colleagues and other healthcare personnel.
- Safety, Compliance, and Professionalism:
- Adhere strictly to all standard safety precautions and protocols to ensure patient and staff well-being.
- Follow all standards of conduct, policies, and procedures of St. Mary’s Medical Center, as well as applicable laws and regulations, reporting any observed violations through the appropriate chain of command.
- Annually complete all required competency assessments to maintain proficiency and uphold standards of care.
- Utilize appropriate measures to promote and maintain patient safety at all times, including fall prevention and infection control.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient and medical information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Make decisions which appropriately include consideration for the age of the patients treated and their specific developmental needs.
- Operational and Continuous Improvement:
- Clean equipment using approved solutions per the Manufacturer’s Instructions For Use (MIFU) to ensure proper sanitation and function.
- Report for duty as scheduled and demonstrate punctuality and reliability.
- Actively participate in continuous professional development by attending in-service programs and workshops to increase job knowledge and skills.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the operation and required unit-specific equipment and procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of ongoing unit-specific performance improvement activities and contribute to quality initiatives.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned to support patient care and unit operations, maintaining flexibility and a team-oriented approach.
